7 Ways to Keep a Call Center Job Exciting

There are many perks to working in a call center, especially a bilingual call center. This includes a comfortable environment, good pay, and room for advancement.

However, such work can sometimes feel a bit monotonous. People who spend hours each day talking on the phone would definitely like to change up their routine every now and then!

There are some simple ways to keep a call center job exciting. Whether you’re a worker or a manager, use these tips to make each day feel fresh!

Create Awesome Traditions

The real secret to an exciting call center is having happy employees. And one of the best ways to keep employees happy is to give them something to look forward to each day.

To do this, create special traditions with your team. Traditions can be as simple as going out for lunch each Friday or dressing in special costumes once a month. And by creating multiple traditions, you can give employees something to look forward to every week!

Special Contests

There are plenty of different team-building exercises out there, and some of them work better than others. But if you really want to build a shared sense of teamwork, hold some friendly contests at work.

For example, if you are part of a sales team, organize weekly and monthly contests to see who can get the most sales. While employees respond well to cash rewards, you can make things even more exciting by offering days off at work or special nights out on the town.

Obviously, this kind of incentive helps to drive sales. But it also brings employees closer together by giving them a special shared goal.

Praise Your Rock Stars

Beyond a bigger paycheck, do you know what most employees really want? Whether by management or fellow employees, most workers simply want to be noticed and praised for their good work.

Sometimes, managers offer this praise behind closed doors. But if you really want the workplace to feel more exciting, we recommend publicly praising employees in front of everyone else. This may include making special announcements about great employees at the next staff meeting or sending out an email memo about employees who have mastered customer service skills.

Publicly praising employees in this way gives them another thing to look forward to when they go to work. And, as a fun side effect, it is a great way to build up employee loyalty.

Theme Days at Work

Earlier, we touched on the fact that call center jobs can sometimes feel monotonous (even if workers have a great script to follow). The reason for that is simple: Employees largely do the same thing every day at work. Eventually, the days can start blending together.

The solution to this is simple: Make sure some days are different!

We encourage creating special theme days at work. For example, encouraging employees to come dressed up once a month as their favorite movie characters. Or another day once a month where you encourage people to dress as their favorite athlete.

It may sound silly, but employees love to change up what they wear to work. And giving employees something to laugh and share stories about help make work feel more engaging.

Hand Out Those Stress Relievers

Call center jobs are all about interacting with customers. Most of these interactions are nice and pleasant. But workers must sometimes deal with angry customers. Needless to say, this causes excess stress to the worker.

Of course, there is nothing you can do to magically make angry customers stop calling. But one thing you can do is hand employees baskets full of stress-relieving toys. This might include stress balls that workers can squeeze or fidget devices they can play with while on a call.

This is a simple way to manage worker stress, and you can turn “passing the bucket” to employees into another fun workplace ritual. When employees know that fellow workers are looking out for them, they will be excited to go to work.

Stretches and Exercises

When it comes to physical comfort, call center jobs are a real double-edged sword. On one hand, you get to sit in a comfortable environment all day. On the other hand, sitting down all day can actually cause employees pain, especially if they have bad posture at their desks.

One way you can save employees some pain is by organizing stretches and exercises. This can be as simple as having employees get up and stretch for a few minutes each hour. But you can also organize physical contests (such as a quick football game) for workers to play during lunch breaks.

For workers who must sit all day to do their job, these stretches and highly physical exercises give employees a release valve. It’s the workplace equivalent of schoolchildren getting recess every day to break up the boredom of the classroom.

Chances to Blow Off Steam

As we noted before, the most stressful part of any call center job is dealing with angry customers. This causes stress to employees, and that stress may fester if employees don’t have a safe environment for venting their frustrations.

That’s why we recommend holding a meeting once a month where employees can swap stories about the craziest customer interactions they have had. Managers should let workers know that this is a safe space for them to talk about their experiences.

By letting employees have this opportunity to vent to each other once a month, you give them a positive way to relieve the stress that has been building up. And employees will be excited to hear the latest round of crazy stories. To build that excitement, even more, consider offering special prizes to the employee with the best story each month.
